Where are the images pasted inside markdown block of ipyb files go?

I have read somewhere that unlike markdown, in ipynb the images is encoded and is inside the markdown but in .md the image is pasted separately in a directory, the problem I am facing is the images are not rendering when viewed from github

As expected, it says the image is missing
