IDX Community Feedback & Suggestions

( This is a revised list of corrections and suggestions sent via DM to the moderators here a while back. With @kirupa’s blessing, I’m reposting this for a bit more exposure, and to invite others to give feedback on the IDX Discourse forum as well. )

Suggestions for category definition pins (re: this post):

Other various suggestions and corrections:

  • In the last section of the FAQ page, you link to a deleted post in a deleted “Site Feedback” category, which should be removed or replaced.

  • Consider implementing Discourse’s official translation plugin, which can use Google Translate as the backend. This would help bridge the global community gap and bring together the already small user base.

  • In the Terms of Service, it appears you intended to make these 3 links Markdown’d with the text proceeding them:

  • At the footer of the Privacy Policy, you left the update date placeholder blank:

  • I see you use a nametag with the Google logo to mark all moderators. Are all mods Googlers, though? Would it perhaps be useful to make a group of the IDX Googlers (likely the admins) separated from the mod group? This could be useful for pinging, especially, but it also is helpful to let users know who they’re talking to.

  • To that point, I think you may also want to implement the Discourse feature to add a slight background highlight color to any messages posted by staff. It helps note that your words carry weight.

  • Backlinking to the other pages where IDX has a presence could be beneficial, in a custom nav section, a header, or just a static page. It seems you want the User Voice page to really be noticed as well. I’m not sure if you’ve abandoned hope on the bug tracker though?

  • I know this is, at least currently, mostly a forum intended for support, but I think IDX could benefit from a little community engagement, don’t you think? I think you should cross-post the blog updates as pinned announcements, do code contests, and make more frequent, small updates.

  • What’s with the tags? Why is there just one tag? Turn them off entirely or let us make our own, perhaps.

  • MOAR CUSTOM EMOJI PLZ.

  • You should add Nix syntax highlighting to the forum, please!

I get the impression that managing this forum is, justifiably, pretty darned low priority. However, I hope that this feedback can assist in growing the space, even if it is slow to mature. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing this @symmetricalboy!

Over the holidays, we’ll go through and address a lot of these issues.
