IDX Road Map, android emulator question

I don’t see android emulator improvements on the road map…
The current state of the emulator is woefully in need of enhancements.

Is Android Studio on IDX going to offer better and more choices in the emulator?
I was hoping to see the emulator get some love in the next update…

Hi @jam - that is an oversight. Improvements to the emulator are high on our list. I will get that list updated shortly :grinning:

Top of mind are:

  1. More device types to choose from (maybe even foldables?)
  2. More toggles to make the emulator switch orientation, change color mode, and other settings

Any others that you think we should consider?

Cheers,
Kirupa

Hey @kirupa , that sounds great!

Changing orientation, latest pixels, foldables, and tablets would be welcomed.

Also in the emulator window, it be nice to remove or get it to ignore the regular webpage, backward and forward.
And copy/paste to and from the emulator,
and audio would be welcome too.

This is great feedback. Thanks for sharing

I guess the emulator was quietly updated to Android 14, which is great. However, there are still no audio or other feature improvements. Unfortunately, I’ve hit a snag in my app development using IDX. I can’t replicate an issue that Google Play Console has identified, and my app has been suspended. sigh… the issues were about the app icon, either it was not visible and when it was they didn’t like that I only had part of the app name in the icon image…

We haven’t made as much progress on some of this as we would have liked! :frowning:

What are your thoughts on Android Studio’s support for emulators as well are direct device access via Firebase Test Lab?

I used Android Studio for the TV emulator, and the selection of device types is nice. However, I temporarily turned off the app’s TV support to focus on getting it published. I’m on the road, and only have a Chromebook, I am eagerly awaiting Android Studio in IDX. As far as Firebase, I thought it was overkill for this app when using Google Play closed and open testing seemed sufficient. I’ll toss my app into Firebase Test Lab and see what happens. thanks
update: my app passed the firebase test Lab, I’m going to guess its the same as Google play console, but at least it gives a bit more detail of the test. It would be nice to have a way to connect idx to Google play console, like firebase can.

Thanks - let me carve out some time later next week to dive into this a bit!
