Maybe it’s time to retire Project IDX?

“It’s been several days now that running projects on Project IDX has become problematic, and we can’t seem to get anything to run. For example, the Flutter emulator doesn’t start, or when trying to run a Next.js project, we encounter the error ‘unable to decode current host.’ Also, some dev environments aren’t even being created at all. These issues, among many others, remain unresolved, and it’s surprising to see Google falling short on this!”

It is still very useful for me personally. And overall I still like google’s support. Familiar environment plus easy auto cloud save with pretty good code completion which is the AI aspect I use the most. (I still use AI studio for the most advanced models because they are much better.)

The decode error is most likely a non-trivial fix. That said…

I would love to consult with Google on the real solution that they should implement that doesn’t rely on vscode, which though it was the best of its time (largely thanks to Atom), is not geared for the future of development and version control. I haven’t been able to contact anyone at Google though, so I appreciate your post as an opportunity for this slight tangent.

And like I said I still appreciate IDX greatly and all the hard work that has gone into it.

Hi, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I also appreciate Google’s effort in building Project IDX, but the issues I mentioned have been unresolved for over a week now. I don’t think the bug is complex enough to take more than a week to fix.

As for your idea, I hope you manage to contact Google and share it with them. If you’d like, I’d be happy to hear more details about your idea.

Wish you all the best!

Even if the bug take months to fix. They should’ve updated their status page. or atleast have given some updates in the forum.
the thing i don’t like is only there is “no update” regarding such issues.

according to them “All systems operational”

omg thanks, I was thinking I was the only one with the flutter emulator problem… I´ve created like 10 different workspaces and nothing, I cant use de android device… and de web server mode cant start neither…
Even if I use idx only to build the apk while i´m not home, it cant because " Failed to install the following Android SDK packages as some licences have not been accepted.", but when I accept it they rollback to non accepted

Dear Google,

This user in no way speaks for the entire internet. Please keep moving forward.

Keep in mind, this is still in Beta. I know it feels polished but it still very much has it’s training wheels on.

Btw this error has now been resolved on initial testing on my machine, with my thanks to @Alex who posted the good news and the rest of the Google IDX team.

The issue similar to the one in Flutter is still not resolved, but the preview of web projects has been fixed

However, it’s been nearly 2 weeks now and the issue with the Flutter emulator is still not resolved. It seems like Google is falling short on this.

Nothing unfortunately

I’m getting the feeling that idx is one of those projects that Google may kill off, the updates are few and far between and for a new product you’d expect updates quite often.

They are falling so far behind GitHub codespaces now…

I can say with certainty that we aren’t going anywhere. There will be bugs, and we are actively addressing them as quickly as possible. The Android emulator bug sucks, so I am not downplaying the severity of that one. We are working on that right now

There are some big updates we are working on, and I’ll share those out as soon as I can.

It can be said louder but not more clearly

Good to hear! Looking forward to the updates.
